Boyne Valley Knights Provide $80,000 Grant to St. Michael Academy
St. Michael Academy (“SMA”), Northern Michigan’s only Classical Catholic high school, is very pleased to announce that the Boyne Valley Knights of Columbus (Council #6314) has provided full funding for six major projects, totaling $80,000, at the SMA school building in Petoskey.
The grant will allow SMA to build out its Science Lab and Lunchroom, install a new Digital Technology Lab, Music Appreciation Program and Recording Studio, and a new Library/Study Hall area complete with workstations. The grant will also allow for internal construction of two additional classrooms.
SMA Principal Dr. Richard Brake stated, “We are profoundly grateful for this extremely generous gift from the Boyne Valley Council. The Knights clearly share our vision of developing a leading regional Catholic high school. These funds will help advance students’ opportunities to experience the benefits of the Classical model in real-world applications – combining the Great Books tradition and top-flight STEAM instruction – within an authentic Catholic experience.”
Boyne Valley Knight Ken Koss added, “We’re proud to direct resources toward Catholic education that promotes a wider understanding of Christianity. As with our brother Knights in Petoskey, we believe strongly in the need for what SMA offers and we are impressed with the quality team of educators they are bringing together.”
Most of the newly-funded projects are expected to be finished prior to commencement of the new school year with the remainder targeted for completion by the end of September. SMA Executive Director Jim Hatch noted, “Summer is a great time to complete in-school projects, but finding quality contractors with August availability has proven challenging. Even so, we recognize that we are quite blessed to have such problems!”
For more information on SMA, its new projects, and expanded Athletic Program, Dr. Brake and his SMA team cordially invite all interested, new, and returning students and families to SMA Sports Info (and more) Night on Monday, August 13, 2018 at 7:00 PM at SMA, located at 2225 Summit Park Dr.. SMA’s new Athletic Director and Coaching Staff will be on hand to share information and answer questions. SMA’s Principal and Teaching Staff will also be present to discuss the upcoming school year at the Academy.
Since opening in 2013, SMA is the first Catholic high school in the Little Traverse area since 1972, and Northern Michigan’s only high school offering a Classical Curriculum. SMA strives to develop the whole person, cultivating academic, moral, and all-around excellence in its students, from within a caring and attentive environment. SMA is accepting students for enrollment in the fall semester.
