In 2011, a small group of parents eager for Catholic high school education in this region came together to evaluate the potential re-opening of a Catholic High School in this area of Northern Michigan. The Regional Catholic High School (RCHS) Exploratory Committee set a goal to objectively determine the feasibility of re-opening the Catholic HS that existed here until 1971.

The original parent committee was joined by community members, rounding out a team of relevant professions including construction, technology, education, medicine, finance, law and marketing, representing students from kindergarten through high school.
Meeting several times a month for more than two years the committee explored existing school options and regional demographics, surveyed parents and parishes, built financial models, compiled a full market analysis and hired an independent third party, the Steier Group, to conduct a capital campaign Feasibility Study. Results demonstrated a strong feasibility, need, and desire for the return of a Catholic High School.

With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and the full support and blessing of then-Bishop Bernard Hebda, (now Archbishop of Minn./St. Paul) the RCHS committee opened St. Michael Academy in the fall of 2013.

The RCHS committee dissolved and was replaced by the SMA Board of Directors made up of individuals from around the region, representing different parishes within our region. School operations are currently led by this Board, an Executive Director, and a Principal.
